Isle of Man TT's options as weather disruption drags on
With the news that the fourth race day of the 2026 Isle of Man TT has now been cancelled, and only two of the scheduled five races so far completed, the event organiser is now in a rush against time to ensure this year's schedule is at least partially completed amid forecasts of yet more inclement weather later in the week.
The opening day of this year’s race week, last Saturday, was the first to be disrupted, with the three-lap Superstock TT called off.
Sunday's Superbike TT went ahead as planned for the full six-lap distance, with Dean Harrison emerging as the winner, before yet more bad weather meant only a shortened three-lap Supersport TT ran on Tuesday, where Michael Dunlop secured his 34th win.
Heavy rain in the morning and again in the afternoon meant the original plan to run three races on Tuesday was amended and, as a resutl, both the Sportsbike TT and Saturday's delayed Superstock race are still to go ahead.
Those won't be happening on Wednesday, either. A day originally scheduled only to have the second superstock race following the suspension of the sidecar class for 2026, more heavy rain meant that at lunchtime the organiser made the call to not run any races.
"Due to poor weather conditions around the course and further showers forecast throughout the day, there will be no scheduled racing today,” it was announced.
"The clerk of the course continues to work closely with the Met Office to identify all available opportunities for racing to take place during the remainder of the event."
The forecast for both Thursday (originally scheduled as a rest and contingency day) and Saturday, the new finale of the TT and set to host the Senior TT, is also not good, meaning that there's now a chance some races are scrapped rather than postponed, and those that remain could be shortened.
With Friday's forecast so far clear, it may present an opportunity for a busy day of track action as the organiser tries to run Supersport, Sportsbike, and Superstock races, all likely to go ahead over three laps thanks to the unofficial rule whereby officials are unwilling to run more than nine racing laps in a single day.
With more rain due on Saturday, clerk of the course Gary Thompson has already admitted that Sunday's final contingency day is likely to be used for the Senior TT, possibly alongside the second Sportsbike TT, with one of the week's two Supersock races then a casualty of the weather.
