Own Mansell's helmet and gloves from his most underrated F1 season
If you think of the best Formula 1 seasons not to yield a title, you can make a very strong case for Nigel Mansell’s 1987 season - and you could own a piece of that season thanks to BUDDS’ Motorsport Icons Auction.
Mansell is best known for his title-winning 1992 season and the dramatic tyre blowout in the 1986 season finale that led to him narrowly losing out on the title.
But when Mansell returned from that heartbreak in 1987, he was arguably even more impressive, taking half of the pole positions that season and six race wins to Williams team-mate (and champion) Nelson Piquet's three.
The most famous of those victories came on home soil at the British Grand Prix, where Mansell hunted down and passed Piquet for the win in front of an adoring crowd.
Mansell had more than his fair share of bad luck that season and any hope of a last-gasp title was snuffed out by a crash in qualifying at Suzuka that forced him to miss the last two races.
It was an impressive season nonetheless, with some iconic moments - and you can get your hands on the helmet and gloves used by Mansell that season.
Mansell has hand-signed them and they come directly from Mansell’s own collection, from the Mansell Collection Museum in Jersey, with a letter of authenticity.
The lots will be available as part of the Motorsport Icons Live Auction on Jul 7 at 12pm at the Silverstone Museum, adjacent to the Silverstone circuit.
The auction will include a number of rare and highly sought-after collectables, racewear, car parts, race-used helmets, and exclusive memorabilia from legendary motorsport icons like Mansell and Ayrton Senna.
