The cancellation of the penultimate round of the Formula SimRacing World Championship means Jernej Simoncic has been crowned the drivers’ champion for the third year in a row.

Initially the race at the Sepang International Circuit was postponed after network issues meant none of the competitors were able to see or join the race server.

Moving the date of the race to August 15, a week before the final round, was considered but that didn’t go ahead due a unanimous decision by the teams to cancel the race rather than reschedule it.

“Due to an unexpected failure of our dedicated rFactor2 server, the drivers were unable to join the multi-player sessions during the qualifying of the 11th round of the FSR 2021 World Championship.” said Felix van Delft, chief operating officer of Formula SimRacing.

“During the event itself it was attempted to troubleshoot this problem. This was unsuccessful.

“The decision was then made to postpone the race until further notice.

“After deliberation with the Team Owners’ Association, it was determined best to not reschedule the event and therefore cancel the 11th round in its entirety from the 2021 championship.

“The FSR administration is working hard to make sure a similar server issue does not occur in future events.”

Fsr Round 10 Simoncic And Hoyer Pic

The final round is still intended to go ahead on August 22 but Simoncic’s 46 point lead over his closest challenger – which is his team-mate Michi Hoyer – means Simoncic is guaranteed to win the drivers’ championship with only a maximum of 25 points available per race.

Burst SimPlexity Esport has also mathematically secured the constructors’ championship due to the cancellation.
