Tuscan GP podcast: Crazy crashes and Bottas’s key weakness

1 min read

Mugello’s first Formula 1 grand prix will be remembered mainly for its crashes – and both the controversial restart shunt and the original first-lap mess are debated in depth in our Tuscan Grand Prix podcast.

Mark Hughes, Scott Mitchell and Edd Straw give their verdicts on both the drivers and the rulemakers’ handling of the contentious restart, and the midfield mess that caused the safety car that preceded it.

This was a weekend when Valtteri Bottas topped every practice session and Q1 yet was beaten to pole, and passed Lewis Hamilton at the start but ended up second again. Was this yet more evidence he just doesn’t have the character to defeat Hamilton? That’s what our panel suspects.

Every single team and driver’s Mugello performance is assessed and explained in our regular post-race debrief episode, as is the biggest lesson F1 needs to take from the race: the seemingly magical effect of an ‘old-school’ track surface on the Pirelli tyres.
