FIA suspends Warwick from Canadian GP stewarding duties

The FIA has suspended Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend's Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix.

Regular F1 steward Warwick has been suspended for "recent unauthorised media comments" and he'll be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi for Montreal, with Bernoldi officiating from the FIA's remote basis of operations in Geneva.

Warwick "acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologised".

No comments are specifically mentioned in the statement, but The Race understands it relates to comments by Warwick on a variety of issues following the Spanish GP, distributed via a betting platform.

These included his personal judgement on Max Verstappen's penalty that was decided by a different set of FIA stewards in Barcelona, a suggestion that Lewis Hamilton may already be considering quitting Ferrari and Yuki Tsunoda's tricky start to life at Red Bull Racing.

Warwick most recently served as an FIA steward at the Miami Grand Prix and will return in Austria once he's served his suspension.

Earlier this year, Johnny Herbert had to step down from his role as an FIA steward due to “incompatible” media work, but Warwick's comments are believed to have been the issue, not the platform they were released via.
