Vinales out of MotoGP race due to injury for first time

Maverick Vinales will miss the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring after suffering a small fracture to his left shoulder in a crash in qualifying.

Vinales' exit from the Sachsenring weekend means Tech3 KTM won't compete at all, with his team-mate Enea Bastianini having already been ruled out due to appendicitis.

It thus reduces the grid to 19 riders. And it also marks the first time ever in Vinales's MotoGP history that he'll miss a grand prix start through injury.

Vinales had made it through the opening segment of qualifying in the morning but then had a violent highside coming through Turn 4.

He was up on his feet immediately and looked sprightly, but - with his left shoulder dislocated - headed to the medical centre for treatment and examination.

The dislocation was "immediately put back in place", as per his Tech3 team, but a suspicion of a fracture required Vinales to go to hospital - where the diagnosis was confirmed.

Tech3 says it is not yet clear whether Vinales will be able to compete in the Czech GP at Brno next weekend.

Vinales had got off to a difficult start at the Sachsenring, struggling to get his RC16 to turn as he wanted it to on Friday and missing out on a top-10 spot - but he'd put himself in position to salvage the weekend by fighting through Q2.

KTM will be represented by just two riders in the sprint and the main race: Pedro Acosta, fifth on the grid, and Brad Binder, lining up 10th.
