MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has sustained a right collarbone injury in a high-speed clash with Marco Bezzecchi early in the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika.

Aprilia rider Bezzecchi was trying to make up for a poor start from pole when he hit the back of Marquez's Ducati and sent both tumbling through the gravel.

Marquez took time to get up and though he was able to walk away unaided, he was in clear discomfort around the right arm that went through so much following his 2020 injury.

Ducati said at the end of the race that a right collarbone injury had been diagnosed at the circuit medical centre and he would travel to Madrid on Sunday night "for further medical tests and to decide on the treatment to follow".

Marquez was seen in the paddock with his arm in a sling as the race ended. He told Spanish broadcaster DAZN there appears to be ligament damage around the collarbone area.

"Not the best way to celebrate the championship!" he said in an audio message distributed by Ducati.

"Looks like this Mandalika GP has been a bit difficult, but today I started to feel better and better, especially in the warm-up, we did a big step. In the race I cannot say because only five-six corners.

"I’m sad because I have some injury in my right collarbone, but from a race incident, in the end Marco Bezzecchi already came to me and said sorry, it happens, it’s something that sometimes I will do, sometimes another will do, Marco accepts his fault.

"Let’s see if we can fly as soon as possible to Madrid and try to understand with the doctors exactly what I have, which injury I have, and try to come back as soon as possible but inside the limits of the recovery.”

The next MotoGP race is the Australian GP at Phillip Island in a fortnight.

The stewards will investigate the collision later on Sunday.

Bezzecchi - who looked in better shape in the immediate aftermath of the incident - was checked in the medical centre afterwards, too, before heading to hospital in Mataram for "a more comprehensive examination".
