'I'm burned out' - Vinales's time in MotoGP looks over
Tech3 KTM rider Maverick Vinales expects to leave MotoGP at the end of the season - and says he is burned out by the series after his contractual impasse with KTM.
Vinales had grown increasingly vocal in recent weeks in his dissatisfaction with how KTM handled negotiations over his future, as his lingering struggles with shoulder injury soured what at one point looked a rock-solid plan to continue their collaboration.
While neither KTM nor Tech3 have publicly ruled him out as an option for 2027, it has been reported KTM has allowed a '27 option in his contract to lapse - and Vinales made it clear speaking to media at the Sachsenring that he does not view staying with KTM as a possibility anymore.
Asked by The Race whether he'd spoken to KTM recently, he said: "Not anymore. I think last week were the last terms. So after that I dont' talk anymore. Obviously... yep, I don't talk anymore."
Asked about racing for someone else, he said: "I don't know. I think in the motorcycle [world] I did everything I could do. I'm not sure. Obviously maybe there are good opportunities - or not. I don't know. I don't even look for it.
"Maybe I want to race and enjoy the racing. But at the moment I'm looking for nothing. I'm looking for huge holidays.
"I'd love to, maybe in the future, do different races. I was watching Jack [Miller] in the Suzuka 8 Hours, and I think this is really fun."
Vinales had been earmarked as a heavy favourite to join the factory KTM team in 2027 alongside Alex Marquez, but while the Marquez deal was done at the start of the year, KTM didn't proceed with the Vinales 'promotion'.
Fabio Di Giannantonio was subsequently announced, earlier this week (although the deal was done well before that), as Marquez's KTM 2027 team-mate, while neither Tech3 nor KTM have publicly shied away from the fact they want to see results from Vinales to at least keep him on in his current spot.
But Vinales has felt this is a breach of "trust", and that it is misaligned with his injury recovery timeline - with appears to differ from KTM and particularly Tech3 boss Guenther Steiner in terms of the certainty of his return to 100% fitness.
Asked by The Race what he has instructed his management to do, Vinales recounted: "The thing is, after [Barcelona], KTM told me that- well, no, they didn't tell me, I learned from the media that Di Giannantonio was going to take my place [in the factory team].
"Then KTM, when I arrived in Mugello, they sent me a contract. So, let's say, on the email, I signed it. OK, it was not really good [terms], but in any case I wanted to race. I really believe in the engineers that are in KTM.
"So that's why, even if it was really against my benefit, I signed it.
"After two weeks, they said it was completely not valid. So after that, what can you expect? I don't want to stay here. This was not really serious from their part.
"So that's why I'm really burned out of this world."
He added later: "I would like to do something different. I think in this world, at the moment I'm burned out. So I don't think I will continue."
