IndyCar podcast: How to prepare a rookie for an oval debut

1 min read

The latest episode of The Race IndyCar Podcast gets an inside view into what it’s like preparing a rookie for their oval debut, with Agustin Canapino’s race engineer Charlie Ping joining the show.

Ping has worked for a wide range of IndyCar teams as well as the engine manufacturers and podcast co-host JR Hildebrand, and has also spent time in touring cars in the Australian Supercars series – so is the perfect fit as race engineer for Canapino on his journey from tin-top ace in Argentina to single-seater racer.

On the agenda this week is an assessment of Canapino’s adaptation and a somewhat surprising but welcome trait in one key driving area, as well as a look at the team culture Ping is part of under boss Ricardo Juncos.

Ping also outlines how to get a rookie ready for ovals and some of the traits he looks for in newcomers – with Texas marking the first oval race of the season this weekend – as well as some of the key challenges rookies face in the unusual nature of racing in circles.

Don’t forget, if you have a question for our hosting team, you can send an email, text and/or voicenote to be included on the podcast to podcasts@the-race.com.
