Formula 1 championship leader Oscar Piastri set the fastest lap in second practice for the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, with George Russell and Max Verstappen rounding out the top three.

The session was uneventful but for a spin for Ollie Bearman early on as the Haas driver went into the gravel at Turn 3, possibly picking up some floor damage.

All of the fastest times were set on softs, with Piastri’s clocking in at 1m12.760s for McLaren - with Russell under three tenths off. Meanwhile, third-placed Verstappen and fourth-placed Lando Norris were 0.310s off Piastri, having set identical times.

Charles Leclerc rounded out the top five for Ferrari, half a second off the leading McLaren’s pace.

Mercedes’s Kimi Antonelli was next up in sixth and Fernando Alonso was seventh for Aston Martin - which applied copious amounts of flow-vis paint to fronts of the cars of Alonso and Lance Stroll.

This weekend sees the implementation of the FIA’s new technical directive concerning the flexibility of front wings, with the likes of Aston Martin having made changes to their wings as a result.

After setting the session benchmark, Piastri spent 14 laps on medium tyres, averaging 1m20.897s. Team-mate Norris logged 10 laps on soft tyres to average 1m20.221s, before switching to mediums for a five-lap stint that averaged 1m18.766s.

Mercedes’ duo of Antonelli and Russell also conducted race runs on softs, with Russell’s 17-lap stint half a second faster on average than Antonelli’s 15-lap stint. Of course, fuel loads and set-ups will have varied.

Red Bull split its long runs between mediums and softs. Over each nine-lap stint, Verstappen was quicker than Tsunoda, who finished 13th on the leaderboard with a fastest time six tenths slower than the Dutchman’s.

At Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton described his car as “undrivable” on his way to 11th. Both Hamilton and Leclerc conducted longer stints on mediums before switching to softs.

Stroll and Williams’s Franco Colapinto were the two drivers to use hard tyres in FP2, with Colapinto’s seven-lap run the most representative. They finished 16th and 20th, respectively.
