Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has emerged as one of the contenders for a Formula 1 return with Aston Martin as a replacement for its current boss Andy Cowell.

Horner’s name is understood to be alongside former McLaren chief Andreas Seidl and current Audi COO Mattia Binotto in being considered by Aston Martin to join the squad as part of a major management shake-up.

The Race has learned that current team principal and CEO Andy Cowell is set to be moved to a new role within the Aston Martin organisation that will be more focused on its power unit progress as it enters a new partnership with Honda.

Cowell, who joined Aston Martin at the end of last year, has previously helped lead Mercedes’ engine division at Brixworth as it powered the team to multiple world championships.

It had been hoped that Cowell could use his management expertise to help guide Aston Martin to similar success in the long term.

However, sources have suggested that, as design chief Adrian Newey has set about changing the way that Aston Martin works, there have been differences of opinion with Cowell.

It is understood that this has now manifested itself in a decision for Cowell to move away from the team principal role and instead shift his focus more on the power train side of things.

Aston Martin’s owner Lawrence Stroll is now evaluating who to bring in as team boss replacement, with a final decision still to be made.

Horner was removed from his role at Red Bull in July earlier this year. It is understood he can return to F1 in early 2026.
