George Russell set the fastest time in second practice for the 2025 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix with Lando Norris second and Kimi Antonelli third.

Russell's benchmark of 1m12.123s was set on medium tyres, which seemed to be the faster compound throughout FP2. The Mercedes driver ended up 0.028s ahead of Norris and 0.288s ahead of Antonelli, both of whom were on softs.

Alex Albon finished fourth, Fernando Alonso fifth, and Oscar Piastri sixth - all within half a second of the leader.

Carlos Sainz was seventh ahead of Lewis Hamilton, while Max Verstappen was ninth. Liam Lawson rounded out the top 10.

Traction was at a premium and traffic caused headaches with numerous drivers complaining of impeding incidents through FP2.

Who was fast on long runs?

After a couple of soft-shod attempts, Russell's medium-tyred lap was the fastest overall, but it was Norris who enjoyed the best race pace, averaging around three-tenths faster over a similar stint.

Over 10 laps, Piastri (sixth overall) was also handy, averaging just seven hundredths less than Norris.

McLaren brought wing and suspension upgrades to Canada, but it's not clear whether it will carry those over to qualifying and the race.

Verstappen struggled with balance that impeded his short runs, but the reigning champion was almost neck and neck with the McLarens on his race run.

Stroll crashes out

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll brushed the barriers exiting Turn 7 and attempted to bring his car back to the pits before being told by his pitwall to stop at the hairpin due to a dangling front left tyre.

The home driver was the second exclusion from FP2 as Charles Leclerc crashed out of FP1 and his Ferrari sustained chassis damage.

Stroll's team-mate Fernando Alonso took a trip through the grass mid-session and Alpine's Franco Colapinto spun at Turn 2 just as he did in FP1.
