Dramatic DNF for Norris as Piastri wins Dutch GP

Oscar Piastri surged into a 34-point Formula 1 world championship lead by winning the Dutch Grand Prix, while McLaren team-mate Lando Norris retired from a close second place in a dramatic race.

Piastri controlled the event throughout, including during restarts after three safety car periods - two for crashed Ferraris and one for Norris's car grinding to a halt with an apparent Mercedes engine failure with eight laps to go while pursuing his team-mate.

Norris had lost out to a bold Max Verstappen opening lap - in which Verstappen brilliantly caught a wild slide as he completed his move into second - but didn't need long to repass the Red Bull, which was just not on the McLarens' pace at Zandvoort, and start to chip away at the gap to Piastri.

Safety cars twice brought them back together, first when Lewis Hamilton had a solo crash straight after his first pitstop during light drizzle, then when the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc bounced off the barriers after being tapped into a spin by Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes as they battled on Leclerc's out-lap.

Norris's eventual retirement handed second to Verstappen, who couldn't challenge Piastri in the final dash to the flag despite being on soft tyres to the McLaren's hards, and an outstanding third to Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar - who had run an unflustered 'best of the rest' behind the McLarens and Verstappen all day.

George Russell picked up damage in a spectacular dice with Leclerc before the Ferrari dropped out. He benefitted from the Antonelli/Leclerc clash to end up fourth, having earlier been asked to let his faster Mercedes team-mate past.

Alex Albon used a superb first lap as the launchpad to turn 15th on the grid into fifth for Williams, while his team-mate Carlos Sainz received a highly contentious penalty for a clash with Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson.

Antonelli was sixth on the road but a pair of penalties for the Leclerc clash and then speeding in the pitlane meant he fell to 16th in the compacted post-safety car pack at the finish.

That meant Ollie Bearman finished sixth despite starting in the pitlane for Haas. He stayed out as long as possible before finally pitting during the Leclerc/Antonelli safety car and gaining huge ground as a result.

Lance Stroll made nearly as much progress to finish seventh for Aston Martin from 19th, pitting early then leaping up the order as others came in under the Hamilton safety car.
