Marquez misses Q2 on Friday for first time in 2025

Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi was quickest in the second Friday MotoGP practice session of the Indonesian Grand Prix weekend, as Marc Marquez missed the top 10.

Marquez's absence from the top 10, coming at the end of a session in which he crashed twice, means he will be a Q1 participant for the first time in the season. He had been the last rider in the field to have never run in the first qualifying segment this year.

Marquez first had a rather gentle fall at Turn 10 - so much so that he was able to pick up his Ducati and continue his run instead of immediately taking to the pits.

But his other crash, coming further into the session on a different run, was a loss of the rear through Turn 5 leading to a nasty impact with the ground for his right shoulder and potentially head, too.

The crashes aside, however, Ducati - and the 2025-spec Ducatis in particular - just did not look all that competitive through this session, with Bezzecchi on the Aprilia a clear standout instead.

At the sharp end all throughout the hour-long practice, Bezzecchi ended the session on a 1m29.240s, four tenths clear of his nearest rival.

That rival was Gresini Ducati rookie Fermin Aldeguer, proving most effective of the six Ducati riders in exploiting the Desmosedici bike, while Pedro Acosta was third as the sole KTM rider in the top 10.

The Honda looks superb again at Mandalika, with works riders Luca Marini and Joan Mir easing into Q2 in fourth and sixth respectively - with Raul Fernandez between them. Trackhouse rider Fernandez is Bezzecchi's only Aprilia stablemate here, with the injury absences of Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura.

Yamaha expected the Mandalika layout to play into its favour and duly capitalised, getting three riders into Q2 already - Fabio Quartararo, Alex Rins and Miguel Oliveira. The fourth Yamaha rider, Jack Miller, had his best lap deleted due to yellow flags, though it anyway won't have been enough for the top 10.

Quartararo's last-second improvement was what eliminated Marquez from the top 10, after Marquez seemed to spend his final run surprisingly prioritising having a reference rider ahead of him.

His brother Alex Marquez took the final spot in the top 10, despite a fast crash at Turn 12 ending his session early.

Advancing to Q2: Bezzecchi, Aldeguer, Acosta, Marini, Fernandez, Mir, Quartararo, Rins, Oliveira, A Marquez

Will contest Q1: M Marquez, Morbidelli, Binder, Zarco, Bastianini, Miller, Bagnaia, Di Giannantonio, Vinales, Chantra

Pecco Bagnaia, back on a more 2024-spec Ducati and having thrived with it at Motegi, looked very far off making the top 10 here - which made team-mate Marquez's decision to follow him on the final run more surprising.

Enea Bastianini and Johann Zarco were two top-10 contenders falling late on. For Zarco, it was his second crash of the session, after he and LCR team-mate Somkiat Chantra fell off earlier within seconds of each other - albeit at entirely different parts of the track.
