Quartararo forfeits MotoGP practice time for 'irresponsible' conduct

Fabio Quartararo has been fined and ordered to sit out the start of MotoGP practice at Silverstone as a punishment for "irresponsible" behaviour after his French Grand Prix crash.

Having started from pole in front of his home crowd, Quartararo was fighting for the Le Mans with Marc Marquez during the crazy early stages of the wet/dry race when he crashed at the final corner on lap four.

He was attempting to remount and rejoin the race while marshals urged him to abandon his Yamaha and head to the service road. Quartararo eventually gave up and did so.

But he still incurred a €2000 fine and suspension from the first 10 minutes of practice at the British GP in a fortnight.

The stewards said he had "behaved in an irresponsible manner, disobeying direct instructions from marshals, causing potential danger to yourself and others".

Moto3 rider Ryusei Yamanaka was penalised for a similar incident, but his fine was €500 and his suspension applies for all of opening practice at Silverstone.

Quartararo admitted afterwards that he suspected he would not have the race pace to sustain a victory fight so had been determined to maximise what he could achieve in the opening laps.

He was among the group of lead riders who had to take double long-lap penalties for changing back to slicks before the second attempt at the race start.

"We knew that the pace to win or for the podium was really complicated, so when it was starting to rain I wanted to push like hell in the first laps," Quartararo said.

"I did one long lap and was still really close to Marc but it was just raining a little bit more and I had not even one moment on the rear, I just completely lost the front.

"But we gave our best. You don’t really expect to lose it like that but it is what it is and we gave our maximum this weekend."

Quartararo had finished fourth in the sprint on Saturday, edged off the podium by the Ducatis' race pace after a valiant early effort.
