A sudden downpour with 14 minutes of opening Malaysian Grand Prix MotoGP practice still to run meant an inconclusive start to the Sepang weekend.
It might still go down as an encouraging session for the troubled Pecco Bagnaia, who set the early pace and was still second to Gresini Ducati's Fermin Aldeguer when the rain hit.
Aldeguer's team-mate Alex Marquez is a favourite for victory this weekend given his usual strong form at Sepang, but he started his weekend with a fast low-side crash as he turned into the Turn 7 right-hander and was only seventh fastest.
Not the ideal start to Friday for @alexmarquez73, who is looking to secure 2nd in the Championship this weekend 👀💥#MalaysianGP 🇲🇾 pic.twitter.com/1JY7goHdJq

In other crashes, Jack Miller slid his Pramac Yamaha on its side into the gravel at the final corner and there were two offs for KTM's Pedro Acosta - the first an early tip-off at Turn 2 and then a trip deep through the gravel when the downpour started.
A handful of riders got their wet-shod bikes prepared in time to get some exploratory mileage in the final few minutes, but that was a fraught experience as standing water was already developing - with Fabio Quartararo, Australian GP winner Raul Fernandez and Brad Binder all visiting the run-off area at Turn 12 where a particularly vicious puddle had developed on the corner entry.
