Alex Marquez set a new all-time premier-class record lap to top second practice for MotoGP’s British Grand Prix.
The Gresini Ducati rider’s 1m57.295s lap was enough to secure him the top spot in Friday afternoon’s session ahead of factory Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo, whose strong form continues.
Despite having been sat outside the top 10 heading into the final 10 minutes of the session, Marquez improved to lead the way with a 1m57.613s with six minutes remaining.
He then went even quicker to top the timesheets, 0.047s ahead of Quartararo and 0.347s quicker than Pramac rider Jack Miller - in third despite crashing early on.
Advancing to Q2: A Marquez, Quartararo, Miller, M Marquez, Bezzecchi, Di Giannantonio, Bagnaia, Zarco, Rins, Aldeguer
Will contest Q1: Acosta, Mir, Oliveira, Vinales, Morbidelli, Marini, Binder, Bastianini, Fernandez, Savadori, Espargaro, Chantra, Ogura
Championship leader Marc Marquez was fourth after an early crash of his own, sliding off at Turn 3 before creeping back to the pits without a foot peg.

He quickly regained composure and set the first 1m57s lap of the day, continuing to improve to finish the session with a 1m57.655s as his fastest time.
Pecco Bagnaia was seventh on his factory Ducati after another difficult Friday, salvaging it by making it straight into Q2 with a 1m57.703s.
There was an early yellow flag after a crash for VR46 rider Franco Morbidelli, who had a front end washout at Brooklands.
Morbidelli found himself in more hot water after interrupting a flying lap from Marco Bezzecchi soon after, an incident which will be investigated by the stewards.

Bezzecchi finished the session fifth ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46) and Bagnaia.
French GP winner Johann Zarco was eighth for LCR Honda, ahead of Yamaha rider Alex Rins and Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer, whose quick final lap in his team-mate Marquez's tow knocked Pedro Acosta out of the top 10 and sent him through Q1 along with all three of his fellow KTM riders.
Trackhouse Aprilia rider Ai Ogura was absent from the session as a consequence of a knee injury sustained in his first-practice crash.
