Bezzecchi snatches win, Marquez penalised, Bagnaia last

Aprilia MotoGP rider Marco Bezzecchi defeated Ducati rookie Fermin Aldeguer in a spectacular sprint race at the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika.

Bezzecchi had had the best pace all weekend, but had to use every ounce of it after a bad start to overhaul Aldeguer with a final-lap overtake.

Newly-crowned 2025 champion Marc Marquez posted his worst sprint finish of the campaign in seventh after serving a penalty for an illegal overtake on Alex Rins - but he was still almost 20 seconds up on team-mate Pecco Bagnaia, who toiled dreadfully and finished last.

Bezzecchi had slumped to eighth at the start as Aldeguer took the early lead, with Pedro Acosta his main pursuer in the early going.

But on lap five of 13, with Bezzecchi in recovery mode and about to pick off fellow VR46 Academy member Luca Marini for fourth, Acosta crashed out while in pursuit of the Gresini rookie, leaving Aldeguer with a buffer out front.

Bezzecchi was over three seconds back after clearing Marini, and had just over half the race to go. It took him no time at all to catch up to fellow Aprilia rider Raul Fernandez - riding for Trackhouse and carrying its special-occasion Gulf livery - in second but it took him some time to line up the move, further reinforcing Aldeguer's position.

As Bezzecchi finally cleared Fernandez on lap eight of 13, Aldeguer's 2.3-second lead looked like it might be unassailable - but that idea was immediately banished by Bezzecchi taking seven tenths out of Aldeguer in his first lap in clean air.

Though the rookie responded, he couldn't stop Bezzecchi from arriving into striking range on the final lap - and lunging at Turn 10 to snatch away victory, with Aldeguer unable to counter-attack despite staying with Bezzecchi for the rest of the race.

Fernandez scored his best-ever MotoGP finish in third, keeping a solid buffer between himself and fourth-placed Alex Marquez.

Joan Mir led Honda's efforts in fifth as his team-mate Marini's pace faded. Though Marini narrowly held on to sixth on the road over Marc Marquez, he was placed under investigation for a tyre pressure infringement immediately after the race and duly dropped to 13th with the standard eight-second penalty an hour later.

The elder Marquez had been deemed at fault for an over-aggressive Turn 10 move on Alex Rins early in the race, running Rins off the track and causing the Yamaha rider his best shot at a strong result so far this season.

The long lap dropped Marc to 13th, but attrition, overtakes and a mistake by Fabio Di Giannantonio allowed him to salvage three points even before Marini’s penalty.

Di Giannantonio was elevated to eighth, a tenth back from VR46 team-mate Franco Morbidelli, who had gained a lot of ground early on.

Just 14 riders - out of 19 starting the race, with Ai Ogura and Jorge Martin withdrawn before the weekend and the shoulder-hobbled Maverick Vinales parking up after qualifying - made the finish.

Bagnaia was last of them, a shocking 29 seconds back from the winner, in a race in which his Ducati works team sealed the teams' title despite the massively subpar points return.

In addition to Acosta, Somkiat Chantra (LCR Honda), Enea Bastianini (Tech3 KTM), Johann Zarco (LCR Honda) and Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) all crashed out, none in serious contention for points.
