MotoGP 2025 championship contender Alex Marquez’s season has hit a considerable stumbling block, with a crash in Sunday’s Dutch TT at Assen leaving the Gresini Racing rider with a broken metacarpal in his left hand.
The injury will require surgery before the next round of the championship in Sachsenring in 10 days' time.
Facing a tougher race than his run to second place in Saturday’s sprint, Marquez had dropped down the standings in the opening laps of the main event race to fifth place behind Pedro Acosta, with the Red Bull KTM rider putting a hard move on his fellow Spaniard for the spot on lap four.

Marquez countered on lap six, coming back at Acosta at Turn 5 and once again making contact as they changed direction with his front wheel off the ground. Seemingly clipping his brake lever against Acosta’s body as he tried to pass, it meant that his wheel then locked when it touched down, bringing him down hard.
The incident was briefly investigated by the FIM MotoGP stewards, but no further action was taken.

He was then taken to the medical centre at the Dutch circuit for further examinations where it was revealed that he broke the second metacarpal in his left hand, an injury that will require surgery to repair.
Already en route home to Madrid, it’s expected that he will go under the knife on Sunday night as he prepares for a likely return to action at the Sachsenring.
The crash means that the gap from Marquez to championship leader (and elder brother) Marc now stands at 68 points after ten rounds of the season.
