Stefan Wilson will require surgery on the broken back which has ruled him out of the Indianapolis 500 following a practice crash.

The Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Cusick Motorsports driver was hit from behind by Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s Katherine Legge when a number of cars slowing caused a concertina affect in Monday’s practice session.

Wilson was rushed to hospital and the team confirmed on Monday evening he had fractured his 12th vertebrae.

Early on Tuesday the team announced Graham Rahal – who was bumped from the field on Sunday – was taking his place for the race.

The IU Methodist Hospital is taking care of Wilson and has decided his surgery will go ahead on Wednesday May 24.

The team has not released a timeline for recovery. It usually takes three months to recover after this surgery but there can be complications and circumstances affecting such timelines.
