Podcast: The gravity of new IndyCar winner’s first triumph

The Race IndyCar Podcast is back as the championship’s hotly anticipated new season kicked off with drama aplenty at St Petersburg last weekend.

Whether it was falling out of his car in victory lane, doing a ‘shoey’, or tearfully praising the parents he hasn’t seen since January 2020, Scott McLaughlin was an endearing maiden winner and the Team Penske driver’s route to victory forms the crux of the podcast.

Overcoming an eventful rookie year and the gravity of his achievement coming from touring car racing to one of the world’s most competitive single-seater championships is covered by JR Hildebrand and his co-host from The Race, Jack Benyon.

The duo outline the key talking points from the race, including struggles-to-redemption for Ganassi and its champions Scott Dixon and Alex Palou, the “best ninth place I’ve ever seen” for Marcus Ericsson, and Arrow McLaren SP’s weekend of disappointment after an off-season of promise.

A contentious rule that played a role in Romain Grosjean’s practice crash on his Andretti debut plus his team-mate Alexander Rossi’s poor start to the season also make the cut for debate.
