Formula 4 World Cup to debut as part of Macau Grand Prix

The 2025 Macau Grand Prix weekend will feature the first-ever edition of the Formula 4 World Cup, as a third FIA 'World Cup' event on the itinerary for the iconic event.

The World Motor Sport Council has rubber-stamped the introduction of the category in addition to the already-existing Formula Regional World Cup, which debuted last year as the new version of the flagship Macau single-seater race that used to be run in Formula 3 machinery, and the GT World Cup, which was re-introduced to the Macau Guia Circuit in 2023.

Technical support for the F4 race will be provided by Chinese F4 organiser Mintimes and the French federation FFSA. And the driver field, rather than being picked by individual teams, will be formed via "a rigorous selection process".

"Macau is an essential part of the education of a young driver, and we have a duty to protect its legacy and its future," said FIA Single-Seater Committee President Emanuele Pirro.

"There are so few challenges like the Macau Grand Prix left that we felt it was the right moment to introduce the FIA F4 World Cup. It will give the best drivers coming from the national level an opportunity to learn what it takes to drive the Guia Circuit in an F4 car, which is a bit more forgiving than an FR [Formula Regional] car, so that when they come back in one or two years for the FR World Cup they are ready to really show what they can do."

F4 cars already competed at Macau before, in 2020-22, albeit as part of the Chinese F4 championship rather than an FIA-sanctioned world-level competition.

"Karting academy students from Macau, China and the wider region" will attend the 2025 event as observers.

This year's Macau GP will be held on November 13-16, from Thursday to Sunday.
