Wehrlein clinches Formula E title despite finale clashes

Pascal Wehrlein became only the second driver to win multiple Formula E titles despite failing to score a point in a contentious season finale at the ExCeL in which he and main rival Jake Dennis came to blows.

Porsche driver Wehrlein ran in the top five for the majority of the 35-lap race, but things came to a head inside the final 10 laps when outside title contender Mitch Evans finally worked his way onto the rear of Wehrlein's car and Evans's Jaguar team-mate Antonio Felix da Costa came into play.

Evans - who as on Saturday had spent much of the race frustrated behind the second works Porsche of Nico Mueller - took attack mode immediately and, in a brilliantly executed move, da Costa held Wehrlein up enough to allow Evans to swoop past the pair and into fourth place.

But da Costa's work was not done there and he resisted any attempt by Wehrlein to come back through, with that sequence coming to a head a lap later as his defensive driving allowed four cars to pass him and Wehrlein - one of which was crucially the customer Porsche of Dennis.

Andretti driver Dennis had qualified a lowly 16th and spent the majority of the race in that lower reach of the pack, conserving energy, but came alive in the closing stages and for a brief moment was ahead of Wehrlein by a point in the live drivers' standings while he ran seventh and Wehrlein sat frustrated still behind da Costa.

Yet the need for the majority of drivers to take attack mode for a second time ultimately brought the two title contenders together again.

With the pair running ninth and 10th, Dennis got delayed briefly behind Joel Eriksson and that gave Wehrlein enough of a gap to lunge around the outside through the Turn 16 right-hander. He and Dennis ran side-by-side down to Turn 17, where Wehrlein tagged the rear of Eriksson's car - sending the Envision-Jaguar into a spin and Dennis into the wall.

Dennis emerged from that ahead but now well outside the points, and pitted the following lap for a tyre change, with Wehrlein nursing his Porsche home to the finish via another da Costa run-in - with no love lost between those two former team-mates.

Wehrlein's radio message while they duelled, in which he called da Costa a "sore loser" and added "f***ing beat him three years in a row", and a five-second penalty post-race for colliding with Eriksson took some shine off the result, but he still ended up classified in 14th - winning the title by the five-point buffer he started the day with.

Evans's late charge to the front came a little too late - as he finished his final race with Jaguar in fourth, leaving him nine points short of Wehrlein in the standings in third place.

Ahead of him, the Mahindras had dominated proceedings after locking out the front row in qualifying but Taylor Barnard cycled through into the lead of the race unseen then held off Nyck de Vries on the final lap to give DS Penske victory in DS's final race as a Formula E brand.

De Vries was backed up by team-mate Edoardo Mortara in third, allowing Mahindra to jump ahead of Andretti to take third in the teams' championship - which Jaguar won by 17 points over Porsche.
