Wehrlein dominates Jeddah opener to grab Formula E points lead

Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein took the Formula E championship lead with an ultimately dominant victory in the first pitstop race of the season in Jeddah.

Wehrlein battled DS Penske's Maximilian Guenther and Nissan driver Norman Nato for the lead in the first stint but nailed the timing of his pit boost stop perfectly and - crucially - saved his one attack mode deployment of the race for after the stop.

He rejoined after his fast-charge in clear air, was able to take attack mode without losing position to any of the early pitters behind him, and then used the extra power and four-wheel drive to make huge ground on a clear track as the late stoppers rejoined behind him.

Wehrlein had a huge lead of over seven seconds once the pitstops were all complete.

Polesitter Edoardo Mortara had tumbled backwards with a wheel-spinning start, but surged through from seventh to second with a very late use of attack mode once the pack was bunched behind the early-stopping but now fading Jake Dennis.

But even with his extra attack mode, Mortara could only get within three seconds of Wehrlein.

The late attack mode tactic settled most of the points-scoring positions, including Mitch Evans' progress to third for Jaguar.

By contrast early leaders Guenther and Nato fell right back to 11th and 13th having used their attack modes prior to their pitstops then been swamped.
