Only Nissan to make full use of Miami Formula E rookie provision

The entry list for the extra Formula E free practice session in Miami for rookie drivers has been completed with the surprise confirmation that Nissan will be the only team to run two drivers.

The FIA informed the teams last month, just before Christmas, that a second driver could be entered in the session. The FIA communication, issued on December 23, stated that "allocation of a second rookie driver to the second car of the team is not compulsory but in case of being done, the same conditions and restrictions apply".

Given Formula E is making its debut on the Hard Rock Stadium track, every minute of data gathered will be beneficial for teams. But strangely only Nissan has elected to run both its cars, fielding Formula 2 race winner Gabriele Minì and its simulator driver Abbi Pulling.

Another team that is set to benefit from the session is Cupra Kiro as its race driver Pepe Marti is allowed to take part in the FP0 session via a new for Season 12 loophole.

Article 4.7 of the 2025-26 Formula E sporting regulations dictates that a driver is considered a rookie until the end of the first season in which they compete.

Technically there are no full rookies on the entry, as all 13 of the drivers due to take part in the session have had seat time in a Gen3 Formula E car before. This is mostly because, with the first official free practice session taking place just two hours later, the teams needed an element of 'plug-in and play' adaptability from the drivers at a track they have very little data on in the first place. Most teams will be correlating simulator programmes in the session, which will be held next Friday afternoon.

The configuration of track is largely the same as the one used for the Evo Sessions marketing event held at the facility last March. On that occasion, Mitch Evans, Norman Nato, Pascal Wehrlein, Sebastien Buemi, Maximilian Guenther, Dan Ticktum, Nyck de Vries and Zane Maloney got some brief experience of the circuit as they worked with their celebrity team-mates.

The driver with the most experience in a Formula E Gen3 car entered for the session is Theo Pourchaire, who was an initial development driver for the car in 2022 before taking part in rookie testing with Maserati MSG at Jeddah and Berlin last year. The 2023 F2 champion also tested for Stellantis in the Gen4 test last week and will run in Miami with Citroen.

Former Red Bull junior, 2026 Dale Coyne Racing IndyCar rookie and Indy NXT champion Dennis Hauger will test for Andretti. He previously drove for Porsche in the 2024 Berlin rookie test.

A combination of F2, Formula 3, Super Formula and GB3 drivers make up the rest of the entry list, with F3 racer Alessandro Giusti likely being the youngest driver at 19 years of age.

Although he is yet to be confirmed at Jaguar, The Race understands Giusti has been in advanced talks with the team about driving its car. He has previous experience of Formula E via the Lola-Yamaha Abt team in the Berlin rookie sessions last July.

F1 Academy race winner Chloe Chambers will drive for Mahindra again after impressing in last October's all-female Formula E test at Valencia.
