Verstappen upstages McLarens to steal Italian GP pole position

Max Verstappen upstaged the McLarens to put Red Bull on pole position for Formula 1's 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Verstappen's first Q3 run benefitted from a tow from team-mate Yuki Tsunoda, but he went even better by himself at the end, and after very briefly losing provisional pole to Lando Norris Verstappen snuck back ahead by 0.077 seconds.

Norris had a fraught session in which he was at serious risk of going out in Q2 having locked up entering the first chicane on his first run, changed his run plan and then underperformed on his next attempt.

He was down in 11th until a massive final lap on used tyres got him through, and he then managed to beat McLaren team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri to second on the grid.

The Ferraris were in the mix throughout but didn't have enough to seriously contend for pole at the end.

They were fourth and fifth fastest - Charles Leclerc ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who will drop to 10th with a grid penalty for his pre-race yellow flag infringement at Zandvoort last weekend.

That will bring the Mercedes of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli up to fifth and sixth.

Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto starred again with eighth fastest ahead of mentor Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin and Tsunoda.

Dutch GP podium hero Isack Hadjar came back down to earth with a Q1 exit.

He and Racing Bulls team-mate Liam Lawson both made errors on their final runs and ended up 16th and 20th, though Hadjar was also aggrieved at Williams driver Carlos Sainz for "playing around" in Q1.
