Norris explanation saves Antonelli's front row grid spot

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli has kept his front-row starting spot for the Chinese Grand Prix sprint following an investigation after sprint qualifying.

Norris had found Antonelli right on the racing line, tipping into the first corner and reporting the Mercedes driver for blocking, telling his McLaren team: "I was going to push that lap, but he got in my way."

It sounded in the moment like a thinly-veiled attempt to draw the stewards' attention to the matter, and Antonelli was swiftly placed under investigation - but has now escaped penalty.

However, the stewards have made it fairly clear he would've been penalised had Norris been on a true push lap - rather than what the McLaren driver confirmed in the stewards' hearing was actually a "pushing warm-up lap".

"In other words," the stewards explained, "he was not actively seeking to set a meaningful laptime when Car 12 [Kimi Antonelli] came out of the pitlane and onto the track.

"Had Car 1 [Lando Norris] been on a push lap then, given the position of Car 12 on the track, Car 12 would have unnecessarily impeded Car 1.

"In the light of the clear position taken by the driver of Car 1 that he was not impeded by Car 12 as he was not seeking to set a meaningful laptime, we took no further action."

Norris qualified right behind Antonelli in the end, so he would've stood to benefit in case of any grid penalty to the Italian and would've moved up to the front row.

However, any attempt to mislead the stewards as to the nature of that lap - which Norris steered clear of by "taking a clear position" he was not impeded - would've surely carried far more serious repercussions in terms of potential penalties or the relationship with McLaren's engine supplier Mercedes.
