Why Hamilton avoided grid drop after red flag investigation

Lewis Hamilton has avoided punishment for a “marginally higher” pit entry speed under the red flag in final practice at Formula 1’s Singapore Grand Prix.

Hamilton was summoned to see the stewards after FP3 for a potential infringement under the red flag caused by Liam Lawson’s shunt.

This was related to Hamilton’s seemingly aggressive entry into the pitlane under the red flag. Race engineer Riccardo Adami had told Hamilton to "attack the pit entry".

But the stewards opted for no further action, believing Hamilton hadn’t done anything unsafe and finding that Hamilton had stayed above the mandatory minimum delta time under red flag conditions.

“During the red flag period following the incident involving Car 30 (LAW), Hamilton appeared to be travelling at a notably high speed,” the stewards’ verdict read.

“However, analysis of the telemetry data showed that between the display of the red flag and the entry to the pit lane, Hamilton remained above the required minimum time as stipulated by Article 37.6a of the 2025 FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.

“Regarding the pit lane entry, the car’s speed was marginally higher than that of other cars in comparable situations, but the driver maintained full car control at all times and did not drive in a manner that could be considered unsafe.

“While the stewards consider that a greater reduction of speed would have been desirable under the circumstances, it is concluded that there is no evidence of a breach of the applicable regulations.”

Hamilton avoids the fate of other 2025 F1 drivers to be handed grid drops for red flag infringements during practice.

Yuki Tsunoda was knocked back 10 places for passing Oscar Piastri in practice in Montreal, while Ollie Bearman's crash at the pitlane entry at Silverstone earned him the same penalty, plus four penalty points on his licence.
