Lewis Hamilton has lost his seventh-place finish in Formula 1's Singapore Grand Prix to Fernando Alonso due to a post-race penalty.
Hamilton was coasting his Ferrari to the finish in the closing laps in Singapore, struggling with braking woes that ended his chase of Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes, cost him a position to team-mate Charles Leclerc, and left him vulnerable to Alonso in the closing laps of the race.
He crossed the line just four tenths ahead of Alonso, but that seventh-place finish was immediately placed in doubt when Hamilton was summoned to the stewards for a track-limits infringement.
That was for leaving the track too many times: any driver who leaves the track four times will be penalised.
Neither Ferrari nor Hamilton contested that he had broken the rules and he was subsequently handed a five-second time penalty.
"During the hearing, [Hamilton] confirmed that he left the track at several occasions," the stewards' verdict read.
"He was trying to manage a brakes issue situation. This being said, after further investigation, and in accordance with the list of exemptions foreseen in the driving standards guidelines, the stewards considered that this was not a justifiable reason and apply the usual penalty for such type of infringement.
"This was not contested by the team representative nor the driver."
Hamilton's penalty dropped him to eighth place, with Alonso earning an extra two points for seventh - his best result since he finished fifth in the Hungarian GP in August.
