Lewis Hamilton's long-time right-hand man Marc Hynes has joined the new Cadillac Formula 1 team in a management role.

The 1999 British Formula 3 champion (Hynes beat Luciano Burti and Jenson Button to the title that year) is best known in F1 as a friend and associate of Hamilton's, having worked with the seven-time champion through much of the latter's career.

That included Hamilton's first season at Ferrari last year, but UK publication The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that Hamilton and Hynes separated professionally - on friendly terms - ahead of the 2026 season.

At Cadillac, Hynes (pictured above, centre-right) is taking up the slightly unorthodox title of chief racing officer, to work in collaboration with team principal Graeme Lowdon.

Hynes was already head of driver development in the Lowdon-headed Marussia F1 team, which disappeared from the grid at the end of 2015.

In his new role, Hynes will "manage Cadillac's driver programme" - which includes not only 2026 regular drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, but also reserve Zhou Guanyu (whose career Hynes has managed) and tester Colton Herta, the IndyCar star who has switched to Formula 2 this season.

Hynes will "play a central role in aligning the driver roster and engineering groups" and work to "strengthen collaboration between the technical and sporting department", Cadillac said.

"We have a strong and diverse driver line-up, and my focus will be on creating the clarity, alignment, and discipline needed to allow everyone - drivers and engineers alike - to perform at their very best," said Hynes.
