F1 Podcast: Las Vegas GP's lingering controversies

1 min read

On track the Las Vegas Grand Prix ended up justifying all the pre-event hype with arguably the best race of the 2023 Formula 1 season.

So there's plenty for Edd Straw, Scott Mitchell-Malm and Mark Hughes to celebrate as they debate the Las Vegas weekend on The Race F1 Podcast.

But by race day it wasn't the hype or the glitz that was causing discomfort. Instead F1's rules and how they're applied left some teams and fans bitter about Max Verstappen not having to hand first place back to Charles Leclerc after his start move and Carlos Sainz being removed from the lead fight by a penalty for component changes that even the stewards felt was unjust. What difference did those penalties make?

When we asked The Race Members' Club to submit their questions for our pundits, the majority focused either on those controversies or their lingering annoyance at what happened on Thursday night when the track problem led to most of the day one running happening in the middle of the night at a track spectators had been ejected from.
