Norris extends McLaren F1 contract with bumper new deal

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris has extended his McLaren contract, taking his stay with the team beyond a decade and through the 2030 season.

But there is scope for that to run longer - as McLaren's announcement of the deal added there was a "multi-year option to commit beyond" that 2030 date.

Norris, who has won the last two F1 races in the upgraded McLaren, became part of McLaren's junior programme in 2017 and earned a race drive for 2019.

He has already notched the highest number of starts of any McLaren driver and is on course to extend that record substantially with his new deal.

It means Norris joins rivals Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen in being signed at least through the 2030 season, the planned end of the current engine rules cycle unless an earlier switch to V8s is agreed for 2030.

"McLaren is my home, and I'm very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030," said Norris.

"When I started this journey nine years ago, I was clear about the goals I wanted to achieve: to get McLaren back to the front and to win championships. We've achieved that goal, but we want more, we want to keep on winning, and we know as a team that we're capable of achieving it."

Team principal Andrea Stella said Norris had been an "integral" part of McLaren's success, and was a "special human" and "exceptional driver".

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown added: "His journey with the team is a fantastic example of our commitment to identifying, developing and supporting world-class talent, and his achievements speak for themselves."

As part of the deal, Norris will be gifted an MCL39 car from his 2025 title-winning year, a "lasting reminder of his contribution to the team".

Norris's deal was the soonest to expire of the lead figures at McLaren, with team-mate Oscar Piastri having committed to the end of 2028 last year, while Brown and Stella agreed new deals within the last two years.
