Ferrari seals first WEC titles since 1972

Ferrari clinched a World Endurance Championship title double in the 2025 season finale in Bahrain - its first top-class sportscar world title since 1972.

Though Ferrari has won the Le Mans 24 Hours every year since it returned to endurance racing's top level with its Hypercar programme in 2023, it has so far not sustained that performance across a full season.

But it dominated the opening rounds of the 2025 WEC and despite Porsche and Cadillac remaining in contention until the final race, it ultimately had no trouble at all sealing both the manufacturers' crown and a 1-2-3 in the drivers' championship led by new champions Antonio Giovinazzi, James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi.

The champion trio were on course to finish third in the race before being asked to let works team-mates Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen past in the closing minutes to make totally certain of Ferrari's top three drivers' points sweep. AF Corse's Le Mans winning trio Robert Kubica, Yifei Ye and Phil Hanson were fifth on the day and second between the works crews in the points.

The Porsches in particular were just not competitive at Sakhir, the factory team exiting the WEC with quiet 13th and 14th place finishes as the Ferraris finished in third, fourth and fifth, while sixth for the best Cadillac was nowhere near what the long-shot contender needed.

Outgoing champion team Toyota hadn't even managed a podium in 2025 until Bahrain, but took a dominant 1-2 in the finale led by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries.

Though manufacturers are contractually obliged not to openly criticise the WEC's Balance of Performance system, the swings in performance from 2024 to 2025 and during this season itself have exacerbated the unspoken tensions over the way cars' performance is adjusted by the organisers. A revised plan included a 'Success Handicap' element has been mooted for 2026.
