Bring Back V10s: When Hakkinen won in his second-to-last F1 race

by Valentin Khorounzhiy
1 min read

Two-time champion Mika Hakkinen took what would prove to be the final win of his F1 career in the 2001 United States Grand Prix – shortly before heading off into a “sabbatical” that in his mind was always going to be retirement.

Mark Hughes – who was covering the race at Indianapolis – and Edd Straw join host Glenn Freeman to revisit that weekend, which marked F1 arriving on US soil just weeks after the 9/11 terror attacks in New York.

Also in the episode:

  • Rumours Michael Schumacher wanted to skip the race
  • Jean Alesi reaching 200 F1 starts
  • Honda’s realisation F1 was tougher than first expected
  • Juan Pablo Montoya’s comparisons between F1 and US racing
  • Jordan having a car excluded – then reinstated
