Marquez dominates for first MotoGP win since surgery
Ducati’s Marc Marquez showcased a dominant level to win the MotoGP sprint in Hungary.
On just his second weekend since his return from shoulder surgery, Marquez led from start to finish in a statement performance to the rest of the grid.
After converting pole position into the race lead at Turn 1, Marquez saw off some opening lap pressure from KTM’s Pedro Acosta then pulled away to a commanding third sprint victory of the campaign.
Despite looking like the quickest rider all weekend, Acosta could do nothing to challenge Marquez and finished over two seconds behind the Ducati rider.
Marco Bezzecchi progressed from sixth to third on the first lap, and held onto the final spot on the podium throughout the race.
Trackhouse’s Raul Fernandez was promoted to fourth after Fermin Aldeguer made an error whilst battling with Bezzecchi, with the Gresini rider fortunate to remain in the race after making a further mistake in fifth.
Jorge Martin finished sixth, which allowed Aprilia team-mate Bezzecchi to extend his lead in the riders’ standings to 20 points.
LCR Honda’s Diogo Moreira claimed seventh at the flag, while Enea Bastianini finished eighth for Tech3 KTM.
Pecco Bagnaia took the final point in ninth after overcoming a last-lap challenge from VR46 Ducati’s Fabio Di Giannantonio.
