The Mercedes Formula 1 team has brought in replacement personnel to stand in for six members who are isolating due to positive COVID-19 tests or have been in close contact with those affected.

It announced on Thursday that a team member had tested positive ahead of the Eifel Grand Prix, and that led to the entire team being retested.

All bar two were negative – with one further positive case detected and another result inconclusive.

Four team members who had been in close contact with the positive case are also isolating in line with FIA protocols, although their tests have been negative so far.

Six replacement personnel have been brought in from the Mercedes team’s UK base to fill roles for the Nurburgring weekend.

The positive cases are the first within an actual F1 team since Racing Point driver Sergio Perez had to miss the two Silverstone races in August due to the virus.

All other positive cases detected under F1’s testing programme have been outside frontline team personnel.
