Both Ferrari drivers to serve Brazil F1 grid penalties
Both Ferrari drivers will take 10-place grid penalties at Formula 1’s Brazilian Grand Prix for new internal combustion engines.
News of Lewis Hamilton’s grid penalty emerged earlier on Saturday, but it initially appeared Ferrari may wait for Las Vegas before team-mate Charles Leclerc took his new ICE, which would trigger a grid drop.
But confirmation came during third practice that both Hamilton and Leclerc would take a fifth ICE of the year in Brazil, automatically triggering a 10-place grid penalty.
Confirmation of Max Verstappen’s huge 30-place grid penalty also came as he’s taking a new ICE, exhaust, turbocharger and power unit ancillary component (within his allowance), which will mean he’ll start at the back of the grid regardless of where he qualifies.
Cadillac’s Sergio Perez will also take a new ICE, turbocharger and MGU-K - which will give him a 30-place grid penalty.
The Ferraris, Verstappen and Perez will join George Russell in taking grid penalties in Brazil.
Russell has a five-place grid penalty to serve, as he confirmed ahead of the weekend.
Brazil grid penalties
Russell - 5 places
Leclerc, Hamilton - 10 places
Perez, Verstappen - 30 places (back of the grid)
