Legendary Formula 1 race engineer Rob Smedley is our special guest on the latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast.
Smedley joins host Edd Straw and Mark Hughes to delve into the art of engineering in F1 and explain a craft much talked about but not always well understood.
This includes a look at the big picture in terms of conceptualising what the engineers are trying to achieve in an F1 team and why it’s not simply a question of the data-crunching process spitting out the answers.
The human element is also delved into, including a discussion of the relationship between the driver and race engineer that draws on Smedley’s experience as part of one of F1’s most famous partnerships in 21st century F1 with Felipe Massa.
Inevitably, the topic of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix scandal crops up and Smedley gives his nuanced take on a news story that’s still rumbling on - as well as reflecting on what was a sensational pole position lap by Massa.
