Ducati MotoGP rider Pecco Bagnaia has been diagnosed with a foot fracture after his scary Qatar Grand Prix sprint crash.

Two-time series champion Bagnaia had been up to as high as second at the beginning of the race, but had dropped back down to fifth by the time the accident happened.

Fellow Ducati rider Fermin Aldeguer had launched an attack on KTM's Pedro Acosta behind Bagnaia at Turn 16 and ended up piling into Bagnaia's bike, sending him into a vicious highside.

Bagnaia was seemingly briefly knocked unconscious by the impact, though was apparently back to consciousness when attended to in the gravel trap.

He was stretchered away from the site of the incident as the race was red-flagged. A subsequent medical centre examination revealed a double fracture in Bagnaia's right foot, and he will be transferred to Doha Hospital for further examination and treatment.

Ducati said the two fractures "involved the fourth and fifth metatarsals" and that whether Bagnaia would have surgery or not would be determined at the hospital.

It has not communicated whether Bagnaia was officially ruled out of the grand prix race on Sunday - though this seems highly likely.

Aldeguer was handed a double long lap penalty for causing the collision, which he served after the red flag in the restarted sprint. He finished the race in 11th.
