# Marquez into points lead for first time in 2026 amid Aprilia disaster

Defending MotoGP champion Marc Marquez won the San Marino Grand Prix to take the points lead for the first time in 2026, as Marco Bezzecchi crashed from pole.

The win has taken Marquez to level on points with Jorge Martin, and he places first coming out of Misano by virtue of having four grand prix wins this season to Martin's one.

This didn't look on the cards at the start as Bezzecchi fought Marquez off the line and began breaking away, with Martin slotting into third - but coming up to Turn 13 Bezzecchi hit the deck, promoting Marquez into the lead once more.

Martin looked the stronger of the two in the early laps after that, and found a way past Marquez at the Rio corner on lap seven - but once ahead his lead stopped growing at around six-seven tenths of a second, before quickly being eroded.

It soon showed that Martin didn't have even podium pace - as he was cleared by the elder Marquez on lap 12, then Alex Marquez two laps later, then Pedro Acosta another two laps later, and finally Fermin Aldeguer on lap 20 of 27.

Martin’s slide ceased there as fellow Aprilia rider Raul Fernandez in sixth place proved too far back to threaten.

Out front, Alex Marquez kept up with Marc - but was never close enough to truly threaten an attack, ultimately following Marc home in a Marquez 1-2.

Acosta was just 2.3s back at the finish in the last of the podium places, with Aldeguer and a distant Martin completing the top five - in what was a remarkably attritional race.

Bezzecchi's crash had kicked off an early salvo of retirements, with falls also for Jack Miller, Diogo Moreira and the out-of-sorts Pecco Bagnaia - while Joan Mir parked up in the pits, having felt unwell through the weekend.

Alex Rins retired in the pits, and Johann Zarco crashed late on to leave the field at only 14 finishers.

Of those 14, Luca Marini was the top Honda rider in ninth, while Fabio Quartararo led the line for Yamaha in 10th.
