Gresini Ducati rider Alex Marquez will undergo surgery and skip MotoGP's Qatar Grand Prix.

While tensions continue to simmer in the paddock over whether or not the series can really go to Qatar next weekend amid the USA/Israel-Iran war, Marquez will in any case be absent from the Lusail round should it go ahead.

Though he finished on the podium this Sunday at Sepang, one of his best tracks in MotoGP, Marquez has felt limited by continued management of a right shoulder injury he sustained in his brutal crash during the Catalan Grand Prix in May.

"From the moment that I came back after the Catalunya accident, I suffered a lot with my right shoulder," he said.

"I decided tomorrow to take a surgery in Madrid. I will try to come back in Portimao \[in three weeks' time\]."

The operation, which Marquez described as "two surgeries in one", will remove a big plate from his shoulder but also drain liquid and try to reduce inflammation.

As it stands, Marquez has been unable to do any fitness work at home in this part of the season, saying: "I don't have muscle, I don't have nothing."

He has been racing with the help of injections, but indicated these were proving increasingly ineffective, especially with races on consecutive weekends.

And with Sepang coming the weekend after Phillip Island and the weekend before the planned Qatar race, Marquez insisted it was "impossible to do three in a row".

Gresini is already down one full-time rider right now as Fermin Aldeguer recovers from a hand fracture at Mandalika.

It is not clear what Gresini's line-up would look like if the Qatar round does take place - though stand-in Iker Lecuona will presumably be on call again, assuming he is willing to go to Qatar.
