Mercedes began the Miami Grand Prix weekend with its upgraded car setting the pace on Friday but walked away on Sunday with a result not dissimilar from what it has experienced in the 2022 Formula 1 so far.

Russell set the pace in FP2 but struggled with a “different beast” of a car on Saturday and slumped to a Q2 exit, while his team-mate Lewis Hamilton bounced back from his nightmare Imola weekend with sixth place on the grid.

A shrewd strategy and some fortunate safety car timing helped Russell turn that into a fifth place finish but his struggles with porpoising on Saturday cast down over Mercedes’ apparent Friday breakthrough.
