All the attention at the end of the Eifel Grand Prix was rightly on Lewis Hamilton equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 Formula 1 grand prix wins.

Dig deeper and you might have spotted an encouraging sign that Red Bull could be gaining on Mercedes and have the potential to get closer still.

But while that may well be the case for the rest of the 2020 season, other things that emerged over the Nurburgring weekend carried ominous hints about how strong Mercedes will be into the longer-term future.
