The provisional starting grid for Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix features four changes to the order caused by penalties.

It may yet be altered further if any of the penalised teams opt to make component changes to get additional parts in their drivers’ pools for the season and accept pitlane starts – though this is less likely in Montreal as all the penalties are for sporting infringements rather than technical failures.

Haas driver Hulkenberg loses the heroic front row spot he booked seconds before the Q3 red flag for Oscar Piastri’s crash because he exceeded the maximum permitted pace under a red flag on his way back to the pits. He drops to fifth and Fernando Alonso now joins Max Verstappen on the front row as he did last year, with the two Mercedes sharing row two.

The other three penalties are all three-place drops for impeding other cars in qualifying.

They mean Carlos Sainz falls from eighth to 11th, letting Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc into the top 10 after his painful Q2 exit, Lance Stroll falls from 13th to 16th in the second Aston Martin and AlphaTauri’s double Q1 elimination becomes more depressing as Yuki Tsunoda goes from 16th to 19th.

It means mild consolation for Pierre Gasly, victim of Sainz’s blocking, as Stroll and Tsunoda’s demotions bring him up from 17th to 15th.

But there are no position gains for one of the most disappointed drivers in qualifying – Red Bull’s fading title contender Sergio Perez remains 12th after his Q2 tyre choice and timing miscue.
