Lewis Hamilton will start Formula 1’s Brazilian Grand Prix from the back of the grid as Ferrari was forced to make further engine component changes after final practice.

Hamilton - and Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc - took a new internal combustion engine ahead of FP3, but Hamilton hit trouble in that session, as smoke started emerging from his Ferrari.

It means Ferrari has had to make further changes since FP3 - specifically, "replacing the entire power unit" - increasing Hamilton’s penalty from 10 places to a back-of-the-grid penalty.

He joins Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in having back-of-the-grid penalties.

Leclerc’s penalty remains at 10 places, while Mercedes driver George Russell also has a five-place grid penalty to serve.

The overtaking opportunities in Brazil make it a popular place for any teams needing to take fresh engine components.

Hamilton charged from 10th to first to win the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2021, while Verstappen won it from 17th on the grid in 2024 and climbed back to the podium from the pitlane last year.

**Brazil grid penalties**

Russell - 5 places
Leclerc - 10 places
