Charles Leclerc has been penalised for his overtake on Liam Lawson in Formula 1’s Brazilian Grand Prix, with the stewards reversing the result of that pass.

Leclerc spent a lot of the race outside the top 10, having started down in 14th, but he enjoyed a more competitive final stint on the intermediates, which included passing Lawson on the penultimate lap.

That move started with Leclerc making contact with Lawson at the end of the previous lap, at the apex of the Turn 12 Juncao corner.

The duo continued to fight until Leclerc got ahead exiting the Senna S and pulled clear, crossing the line in seventh place.

But both drivers had to see the stewards after the race, with Leclerc penalised.

“While the contact was minor and Lawson was able to maintain the \[position\] thereafter, Lawson claimed that the contact damaged the rear left rim of his car, and also enabled Leclerc to get closer to him on track and then eventually overtake him five corners later," the stewards' verdict read.

“Furthermore, under the driving standard guidelines, Lawson had the right to the corner and it was for Leclerc to take the necessary steps to avoid a collision.

“Leclerc that it was a minor contact with no obvious sporting consequence.

“While we acknowledge that the contact was minor, having examined the fight on track between the two cars, we conclude that Leclerc was able to get closer to and thereafter overtake Lawson because of the contact.

“The contact clearly disrupted Lawson and allowed Leclerc to pull up alongside when it was further away before the contact. This was an obvious sporting consequence.

“In mitigation, the wet conditions coupled with the nature of the contact (ie minor) was taken into account in imposing a five-second time penalty as opposed to a 10-second time penalty.”

That penalty drops Leclerc from seventh to eighth and promotes Lawson from eighth to seventh.

Leclerc’s ninth-placed Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton was lapped, so Leclerc wouldn’t have dropped behind him, even if a larger penalty was imposed.

When speaking to media after the race Lawson said he hadn't had time to properly review the incident, but he thinks "we got really lucky" the consequences weren't worse.

He even said it was "exactly like \[Leclerc's\] GP2 move in Abu Dhabi, like on \[Alex\] Albon \[nine\] years ago.

"He did the same kind of thing. So, maybe it's his speciality. I don't know if it's legal or not. We'll obviously go and review it. But it was a good battle overall."

In the final round of his dominant 2017 Formula 2 title campaign, Leclerc touched the back of Albon's car before passing him for victory on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi sprint race.

## Antonelli and Bearman penalised

Elsewhere, there was a pair of five-second time penalties for unsafe releases.

Kimi Antonelli was punished for being released into the path of Franco Colapinto's Alpine.

The stewards said Mercedes "acknowledged that this release could have been handled better and in a safer manner".

Antonelli's five-second penalty didn't alter his fifth place finish as he finished 20 seconds clear of Oscar Piastri.

Ollie Bearman also got an unsafe release penalty that didn't change his position (17th).
