Lewis Hamilton says the Ferrari Formula 1 team needs some "serious talks" behind the scenes after the [opening lap incident with Charles Leclerc](https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/a-ferrari-1-2-thrown-away-our-verdict-on-latest-leclerc-hamilton-spat/) that he thinks cost his team a [Mexican Grand Prix win](https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/antonelli-clinches-title-as-ferrari-mess-helps-verstappen-win/).

Having started from pole position, Hamilton had kept his lead at the start through the opening sequence of corners, despite an initial challenge from his team-mate who had got up to second. However, he came under a fresh attack on the run to Turn 4.

As Leclerc attempted to go around the outside, the pair managed to outbrake themselves.

Leclerc ended up cutting across the grass and rejoining after Turn 5, having moved into the lead, while Hamilton ran wide at the Turn 4 exit and lost momentum – allowing Max Verstappen behind him to get past shortly afterwards.

That incident proved decisive as the [five-second penalty that Leclerc picked up](https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/fia-explains-controversial-leclerc-penalty-decision/) dropped him behind Verstappen at their first pitstops.

For the remainder of the race, which included a red flag and safety car restart, Hamilton was unable to find a way past Verstappen as he came home second on a day he felt Ferrari had the pace to do better.

Hamilton repeatedly throughout the race expressed his annoyance about Leclerc only picking up a five-second penalty for what he did.

And after finishing second to Verstappen, he felt the way that the events had cost Ferrari was something that needed to be discussed internally.

"A tough, tough day," he said. "I think we had the pace to win today, but it wasn't meant to be. And you know, we'll take it offline and figure out what we can do in the background."

Hamilton said that agreement in the drivers' briefing had been that if drivers cut the grass at the first or second complex of corners then they should give positions – as he also questioned post-race why Leclerc's penalty was so lenient.

"Obviously, last year I got a 10-second penalty for that same move that he did," said Hamilton.

"But ultimately, it was that that lost us the win today, and I think we have to have some serious talks behind the scenes for sure."

## Leclerc: Hamilton's driving 'very much on the limit' too

Leclerc did not agree with Hamilton's assessment that the matter was particularly serious, as there had been no contact and both made a mistake in what was a fight for the win.

"We will talk about it, obviously," he said. "I don't know if he was very unhappy with what I did, because I felt like it was very much on the limit, also, what he did.

"I think he was maybe more angry with the whole situation, how the situation was dealt in \[Turns\] 4-5, with the penalty, etc. This is something we'll talk about for sure."

Leclerc did not see anything out of the ordinary in how the pair had approached their fight though, as there were no team orders preventing them battling.

**"**I mean we are fighting for the win and so of course there's going to be very little margin left from him and from me," he said.

"At the end we both did a mistake going into Turn 4, it's not like we had contact whatsoever. We both went straight and that gave the opportunity for Max to overtake.

"So I don't think it should be that much of a talking point. Of course it was close, Turn 1, 2, 3 was very close, but I was expecting it to be \[in the\] fight for the lead.

"For Turn 5 we both made a mistake. I paid with a penalty, then you can argue whether it's enough or not, and Lewis then paid out of Turn 5 with Max."

Leclerc also explained that he had discussed with his team about whether or not to give the position back after the incident, but the situation was complicated because Verstappen had got between himself and Hamilton.

"We spoke briefly with the team to try and understand," he said. "I asked 'what should I do now?' and it's always very tricky.

"And obviously in that situation you kind of expect you have to do something, but is it second, is it third... At the end I kept going.

"Obviously it's going to be a bit of a talking point for sure at the next briefing."
