Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson’s [punishments for their practice collision](https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/verstappen-and-lawson-get-grid-drops-for-clumsy-mexico-clash/) are the headline penalties on Formula 1’s 2026 Mexican Grand Prix starting grid.

Verstappen drops from fourth to fifth as a result of that ruling, while Lawson was initially set to fall from eighth to ninth.

He'll now start much lower than that as he has been excluded from the qualifying results entirely for an MGU-K infringement.

He’d join Valtteri Bottas - already the slowest qualifier, and also taking a 50-place grid penalty for taking fresh engine components in his Cadillac.
