Former US ambassador to the United Kingdom Robert Wood Johnson has acquired a minority stake in the Aston Martin Formula 1 Team.

Johnson is owner and chairman of the NFL’s New York Jets and was the US ambassador to the UK from 2017 to 2021, during Donald Trump’s first Presidential term.

The businessman is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical empire. He also owns a 43% stake in Crystal Palace football club.

Johnson’s purchase of the Aston Martin stake is purely commercial, with Aston Martin having stated that he will “not undertake any day-to-day management duties” as Lawrence Stroll still manages and controls Aston Martin.

The NFL owner’s stake has not been disclosed.

“During my time as US ambassador to the United Kingdom, I have developed a deep appreciation for Aston Martin’s rich history, as well as Lawrence Stroll’s strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit,” he said.

“I am excited to partner with him and contribute to the continued development of the team, with the ambition of building an organisation capable of competing at the very highest level of the sport. We also share a commitment to growing the fanbase in the United States and introducing even more fans to the excitement of Formula 1.”

Aston Martin’s executive chairman Stroll said that Johnson’s “experience, passion and investment further strengthen our position as we enter the next phase of our competitive journey.

“His deep appreciation for our brand, combined with his commitment to innovation and commercial opportunity, makes him an ideal partner as we look to the future.”

The Aston Martin F1 Team is owned and operated by AMR GP, a private company in which Arctos Partners and Adrian Newey are minority shareholders. Lawrence Stroll’s Yew Tree Consortium owns the controlling stake in AMR GP.
